Who is God? How can we get to know God?
If you really want to know who is God and understand God, you can’t rely on your own thoughts and perceptions.
In the book, “Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands,” Paul David Tripp says:
“People develop an experiential theology that seems plausible because it flows out of their interpretation of what has gone on in their lives. The more this interpretation–and not scripture–shapes their view of God, the greater the gap is between their confessional (official) and their functional (actual, day-to-day) theology. Yet their functional theology will seem to have a ring of logic and truth because it fits their view of life.”
Basically, we each shape our thoughts about who God is based on our daily experiences. Sometimes our interpretations may be close to letting us know who is God. However, often our thoughts are not in line with who God REALLY is.
How does anyone know who you are?
Think of it this way: How do people know YOUR character and thoughts? Generally speaking, people base their beliefs about you, your character and thoughts on the things you say and do. Their interpretations are based on their experiences with you. They might have a different opinion if they read a book that was a complete story of your life.
People can easily misjudge your thoughts, motives, or true character without you explicitly telling them these things. Any sort of mis-step on your part can make people wrongly interpret your actions. They may think you don’t care about them or have devious motives. In reality you may have been busy, distracted, or have some other issue in your life.
It’s the same for us in our interpretations of who is God. We make judgments about Him, but our judgments are easily wrong.
God is Good: He's Better Than You Think
25% OffLUCKY for us, God provides us a thorough source for what He thinks, wants, expects, etc. That source is The Holy Bible.
Learn who is God from the Holy Bible
When we read the Holy Bible, we read God’s words to His people. We will learn about God’s requests and His actions. Ultimately we will be able to understand who is God through God’s Word.
So if you’re wondering who is God, or struggling with God’s actions in YOUR life, I HIGHLY recommend reading your Bible from beginning to end. Pay close attention to all that God says and does in relation to what the people do.
God lovingly fixes things when people mess up (like making clothes for Adam and Eve when they realize they are naked).
On the flip-side, God also punishes people when they are defiant and hard-hearted. He gives people many, many chances, but God also gets tired of people being willfully defiant.
While God is a complex spiritual, being, you can understand Him if you take the time to study Him. Understanding who is God requires our active learning about God’s character, His will for us, and His greatness.
The only way to get a full understanding of who God is–is to read the Holy Bible. Ask God to open the eyes of your heart to understand Him. He will help you get to know Him!
